SOME NOTES ABOUT 'ACADEMIC' CV's
CV's designed to get a PhD or Professor, RA position should be firmly based on
research experience and activities. Projects and placements should be described
in a decent paragraph using language which should be understandable by the
informed lay-person, and not in heavy jargon. The context of the research should
be alluded to. In other words, the applicant should show that they know the wood
as well as the trees.
The interview is not likely to dwell on management potential etc. or be
'competence' based as are industrial & commercial job interviews. Evidence
that you have been involved in Departmental activities may however well be of
interest. Other details should aim to paint a 'round' picture of you as an
individual - as any CV should.
The exception to the above is for people applying to vocational Diploma/Masters
courses where assessors may well have an eye out for relevant activities and
traits which would make the candidate suitable for a career in the chosen course
- Personnel Management would be an example.
For PhD's etc. a normal 2-page CV should be suffice with other pages in
addition:
| a list of publications, reports, poster sessions etc. |
| a 'Research Resume' to map out the specialist interests of the candidate
in an effort to answer the question - what kind of research/teacher are we
looking at? It should be a statement not just of techniques but an
indication of where the individual is coming from and where they hope to go
in their chosen field. |
